Syllabus:

Psycholinguistic models of normal language and speech. Speech science. Pragmatic and sociological factors affecting human communication. Development of communication, language and speech in infancy, early, middle and late childhood, adolescence and adulthood. Observing, describing, analysing and documenting communication, language and speech behaviours. Library search skills. Report, assignment and oral presentation skills.
 

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit students will be able to - Describe processes involved in normal communication, language and speech using psycholinguistic models as frameworks. Describe the following components of language - phonology, syntax, morphology, semantics, pragmatics and discourse. Analyse communication behaviours in terms of the above language components. Describe and evaluate theories of normal language development. Observe, record, describe and evaluate communication behaviours that are important indicators of normal language development.
