Syllabus:

Introduction to special alloys and advanced materials. Alloy steels, stainless steels, nickel based alloys and superalloys. Titanium alloys, light alloys and new alloy developments. Base metal alloys and precious metals. Surface conditioning. Types and applications of polymeric materials. Glasses and ceramics. Developments in composites technology. Failure and defect analysis. Materials selection and case studies.
 

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit the student willhave gained an indepth knowledge of the properties and application of a range of specialised materials. In particular they will be able to make rational decisions on materials selection to facilitate successful engineering design.

Unit Assessment Breakdown:

Written assignments 30%, Tutorial exercises 20%, Final examination 50%. To gain a paa in this unit, students must obtain at least 40% in Written assignments, 40% in Tutorial exercises and 40% in Final examination of the assessment and 50% overall.
