Syllabus:

Historical aspects of urban development. Urban systems and central place systems. City form and structure. The factors influencing the location of residential, commercial and industrial land uses. The effects of urbanisation on the physical and social environment. Case studies from Australia. Western Europe, North America and Monsoon Asia.
 

Unit Outcomes:

On completion of this unit students will have- Become familiar with social scientific and, in particular, geographical approaches to the study of urban development. Conducted practical and field work on an urban topic. Grounded their knowledge through a consideration of the major urban development and planning issues of the Perth metropolitan area. (AS354/Geography 314 students only) Conducted an individual or small group research project on an urban topic.
