Syllabus: | Roles and status of languages in multicultural societies, particularly in Asia. Pedagogic grammar of English and a contrastive analysis between English and aspects of other languages-pragmatics, discourse and text with a focus on Asian languages. |

Unit Outcomes: | On successful completion of this unit, students will have - A familiarity with methods of sociolinguistic analysis as they relate to the role language plays in the construction of social realities. |

Unit Assessment Breakdown: | Oral Presentation of findings of a study project 15%, Participation 10%, Proposal for a study project on topic to be decided in consultation with the lecturer 15%, Seminar presentation on a topic to be decided in consultation with the lecturer 10%, Written paper based on seminar presentation 20%. Written paper presenting findings of study project 30%. This is by grade/mark assessment. |
