Syllabus: | Study of gerontology including theories of ageing, normal and abnormal biopsychosocial ageing, application of occupational therapy models and practice within primary, secondary and tertiary aged care services. Australian demography, policy and legislation. Issues around ageing. Fieldwork project. |

Unit Outcomes: | Upon completion of this unit students will be able to - Apply major biological and psychosocial theories of ageing and analysed their effectiveness in guiding occupational therapy practice. Differentiate between normal and abnormal biological, social andpsychological changes associated with ageing. Analyse the relationships between the environment and occupations, on the health, well being, life style and quality of life for elders. Critically examine the socio-cultural and political influences on legislation, policy and funding of health and human services for older adults in Australian society. Apply occupational therapy principles, academic knowledge and interpersonal skills in assessment and interventions with older adults. |
