Syllabus: | Using problem-based learning methods, covers the relevant practical skills necessary to design, construct, program, test and fully describe a computer controlled machine that must satisfy specific performance objectives. Lecture topics include - conceptual design and visualisation, mechanical construction, power supply design, optoisolation, microcontroller programming and chip downloading, sensor interfacing and calibration, 'master-slave' communications between networked computers, protocol programming, hardware and software debugging, experimentation, performance testing, report writing and design documentation. |

Unit Outcomes: | Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to understand and appreciate modern "building block" approaches and practical skills used in the design and control of real-world hardware, and design, build and program an electronically controlled machine (mobile robot or actuator mechanism) to perform a specific motion control task. Generic skills developed in this units include teamwork, self-learning, creative thinking, analysis, visualisation, logical decision-making, computer programming for hardware control, project planning and design documentation. |
