Syllabus: | Deformation mechanisms, stress and strain theory, Mohr circle, strain analysis, compressional and tensional structures, thrust faults, deformation partitioning, structural reactivation, geometric analysis, microstructures. Processes of mountain building.Evolution of igneous rocks - chemical diagrams, petrogenesis, mantle composition and crustal processes. Evaluation of rock associations in terms of plate tectonic processes. |

Unit Outcomes: | On completion of this unit students will have - An understanding and appreciation of the geodynamic processes active on the modern earth. The capability to undertake practical tectonic analysis. A fundamental appreciation of the interrelationship of different Earth Science sub - disciplines in understanding the dynamics of the Earth. Knowledge of the geometry and relationship of structures in an evolving orogen. |
