Syllabus: | Ecology and microflora of the oral cavity. Bacteriology of dental plaque, dental caries and periodontal disease. Microorganisms involved in pulp and periapical pathology. Infections that may be caused by dental procedures. |

Unit Outcomes: | On successful completion of this unit students will have - Developed the ability to explain the ecology and roles of various oral microorganisms. Developed the ability to explain the aetiology of dental caries, periodontal disease, pulp and periapical infections. Demonstrated the ability to perform and interpret various dental caries susceptibility tests and evaluate their applications in dental treatment planning programs. Developed the knowledge to explain the sources of endogenous and exogenous microbial oral infections. Demonstrated the ability to take steps which will minimize the risk of patients developing infections from dental manipulations and cross-infection. Adopted the standard precautions for infection control. |
