Syllabus: | Introduction to the flow of water around objects. Laminar and turbulent flows. Boundary layers, flow separation and wakes, cavitation. Drag on objects - drag minimization. Resistance of ships and resistance minimization. Lift of foils. Ocean waves. |
|
Unit Outcomes: | On successful completion of this unit students will understand the flow of water around objects (including the phenomena of boundary layers, wakes and cavitation), know the principal factors affecting drag on immersed objects (including ships), and methods for minimizing it, understand how foil lift is generated, and be able to calculate it for applications such as hydrofoils, ships rudders and yacht keels and understand how water waves travel and be able to calculate their basic properties. |
