Syllabus:

The legal system. Sources of law. Courts, tribunals, statutory interpretation. Case law and precedent. Procedure and evidence. Legal aid. The Australian Family Law Act, divorce, custody, child support, property settlement. The Child Welfare Act. Adoption. Sexual assault. Restraining orders. The Child Support Act.
 

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit students will have - Become familiar with the laws, courts and procedures of Western Australia relevant to the family. Learnt some fundamental rules of family law, definitions and principles. Understood the relationship between Federal laws and State laws relevant to the family. Recognised legal issues related to the family when they arise and to solve family law problems. Referred to appropriate legal resources in order to investigate issues relating to the family and construct legal arguments. Developed report writing skills.
