Syllabus:

The role of local history and other components of the heritage industry. The relationship of oral history to popular memory. Oral history and related ethical and legal issues. Archival research. The aims and techniques of local history. Students undertake interviews and a major research project using the tools of archival research and oral history.
 

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit, students will have- Developed techniques of oral history. Recognised the scope of documents and artefacts. An awareness of techniques involved in collecting, interpreting and presenting data in the local history field. An understanding and appreciation of the theory and fieldwork techniques necessary for the interpretation of local history. Completed a substantial piece of research and reporting of a local history project.
