Syllabus:

An analysis of the historical development of information retrieval theory and of current research into the relationship between technological development and information retrieval possibilities.
 

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit, students will have- An understanding of the conceptual and operational difficulties associated with the evaluation of information retrieval systems. An understanding of the historical development of information retrieval research. An understanding of the theoretical foundations of on-line searching. An awareness of the difficulties of research in the area of language representation in information retrieval. An appreciation of new developments in the area of knowledge-based systems, non-linear information retrieval systems, artificial intelligence, hypermedia and expert systems. The ability to construct an Access database.
