Syllabus: | Geological discontinuities and intact rock. In-situ stress measurements. Measurement of discontinuity characteristics from core logging and rock exposures. Data analysis, interpretation and definition of structural domains for design. In-situ block size distributions. A critical review of rockmass classification systems. Estimates of rockmass strength. A reveiw of case studies, including field mapping of cores and rock exposures. |

Unit Outcomes: | On completion of this unit students will have - Measured and documented geological discontinuities from core and exposures. Understood methods of in - situ stress measurement. Analysed and interpreted geotechnical data, defined structural domains for design and calculated in - situ block size distributions. Performed a critical review of mass classification systems. Estimate rock mass strength. |
