Syllabus: | Topographic map characteristics - natural and cultural features. Figure of the Earth - coordinate systems. Map scales. Map directions - bearings. Relief representation - contour interpolation and interpretation. Topographic map generalisation. Map projections - types and use. Universal Transverse Mercator Projection. Australian Map Grid. Navigation charts. |

Unit Outcomes: | On completion of this unit students will have distinguished between the natural and cultural features as shown on topographic maps. Understood the basic measurements of the Earth, comprehended and determined linear and aereal map scales, understood, calculated and plotted map directions, appreciated relief representation and effectively interpreted topographic morphology from contours, interpolated the location of contours from given field observations, created topographic map generalisations according to various map scales, understood the concept of transforming the "round" Earth to a flat plane via map projections, appreciated the fundamentals of the Universal Transverse Mercator projection and in particular the application of the Australian Map Grid and learnt the basic principles of navigation charts and their uses in charting courses. |
