Syllabus:Community health - health care systems, health policy, financing, workforce. New Public Health, Ottawa Charter. Public health dentistry - characteristics, planning services, evaluation, delivery systems, fluoride. Dental health promotion - health behaviour models, social factors, campaign examples. Research - types, epidemiology, dental indices, designs, data, samples, statistics, evaluation, literature reviews.
 
Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit students will have - Demonstrated an understanding of basic research methods. Produced reviews of scientific journal articles. Demonstrated an understanding of oral health promotion theory especially in relation to disadvantaged groups. Delivered a seminar to the rest of the class on a dental health promotion topic. Demonstrated an understanding of basic public health theory. Demonstrated an understanding of the importance of health policy and the ways that this affects oral health.
