Syllabus:What is science? Paradigm shifts, ethics and values in science. Research design - Quantities and qualitative research paradigms and methodology. Experimental methods and hypothesis testing. Clinical research. Epidemiological research, cohort studies, case control studies. Qualitative research. Parametric and non-parametric analysis, selected tests. Conducting an independent research project, presenting finding and conclusions.
 
Unit Outcomes: On Successful completion of this unit students will have - Identified appropriate research designs for research questions. Used suitable statistical analysis for data. Completed an ethics application for research project. Accessed scientific literature using electronic searching tools. Written a comprehensive literature review. Carried out an independent research project. Presented findings and conclusions using presentation software such as powerpoint with accompanying script. Written a concise, well referenced research report. Critically evaluated research studies. Described philosophical and ethical issues in research.
