Syllabus:A critical analysis of the social, cultural, environmental, political and economic determinants of health, ill-health and disability. Policy, structural and legislative contexts that frame health service delivery. Analysis of public health concepts and principles. Mental health. Psychiatry. Foundations of occupation as a core professional value.
 
Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit students will have - Critically evaluated the assumptions supporting the relationship between occupation, health and adaptation, that enables lifestyle change within an occupational therapy framework. Investigated the association between patterns of health, illness, disability and social groupings, and draw conclusions that have implications for ethical and culturally appropriate occupational therapy services across the continuum of care, inclusive of marginalised groups. Critically appraised relevant legislation and its impact on people with impaired function that results from medical, developmental, physical or psychiatric conditions or disabilities.Analysed the concepts and principles of Primary Health Care thatframe public/population-based health and other models of service delivery as they pertain to the needs of individuals, groups and communities. Described major psychiatric conditions, explain their impact upon occupational performance and discuss appropriate health care service provision in relation to people with these conditions.
