Syllabus:Professional and technical skills for civil engineers - philosophy of engineering, creative thinking, leadership and management, design and its interaction with construction, design and construction of bridges, environmental considerations in design and construction, construction techniques for structures. Construction contracts - bill of quantities and standard method of measurement methods of estimating.

Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit students will have an understanding of how the components of the civil engineering course come together. They will have attained skills that will enable better integration within the profession and assist them to approach civil engineering projects with confidence. They will also have attained an understanding of the standard method of measurement of quantities and the issues involved in its effective use in Civil Engineering, and will be able to explain the role of bills of quantities as contract documents, explain methods of estimating costs as well as demonstrating their importance in civil and structural engineering projects.
