Syllabus: | Structural Analysis - Revision of concepts, stiffness, flexibility, indeterminate structures, bending moments, matrix operations. Approximate methods of analysis. Application software - Multiframe, microSTRAN, Spacegass and others. Stiffness and flexibility matrices for individual members. Stiffness method - procedure. Stiffness method - applied to trusses, beams and frames. Flexibility method - procedure and concepts, applied to trusses, beams and frames. Self straining of structures. Stress analysis - introduction to tensor analysis using the stress and strain tensors. Deformation analysis. Structural dynamics (vibration). Case Studies of analytical problems and engineering failures. |

Unit Outcomes: | On successful completion of this unit students will have an understanding of the matrix methods of Structural Analysis and their use in computer software. They will also gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between the stress and strain concepts in Structural Analysis and concepts related to dynamics of structures including the use of computer programs. |
