Lecture:1 x 3 Hours Weekly
Tutorial:2 x 1 Hours Weekly
Laboratory:1 x 2 Hours Fortnightly
Prerequisite(s):    7161 (v.5) Mathematics 172 or any previous version
    OR
7063 (v.6) Mathematics 102 or any previous version
Syllabus:Continuous-time signals and systems, system properties and classifications. Power and Energy signals. Linear and time-invariant systems, impulse response, convolution. Signal Decomposition. Fourier Series, Properties, Gibbs Phenomenon, Fourier Transform,Signal Spectrum, Frequency response, Filters. Laplace Transform, Transform Theorems, Partial Fraction Expansion, Solution of Differential Equations. Two-sided Laplace Transform.

Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit students will gain an appreciation of the importance of Linear System descriptions of practical systems and an understanding of the mathematical methods used in the system and signal descriptions. They will gain competence in the analysis of the behaviour of simple systems including those in electrical and mechanical engineering and will understand the various signal description alternatives and their advantages. They will be able to differentiate the two time and frequency domain descriptions of signals and systems and design simple systems for a given specification and/or application.
