Syllabus:

Communicate effectively in a range of formal and informal settings. Developing awareness of language variations and regional differences in language use. The four skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing will be integrated in collaborative learning activities. Introduction to the writings of famous Chinese writers and philosophers and the significance of these writings in shaping Chinese civilisation.

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit, students will have- Attained a reasonable degree of competence in using a variety of appropriate and idiomatic expressions in formal and informal gatherings. Exchanged opinions and conducted discussions in Chinese on a variety of social and cultural issues. Extracted information from Chinese television programs and newspapers and reproduced main points orally and in writing. Demonstrated the ability to act appropriately in gifts/present giving, accepting and declining, particularly during festive seasons.
