Syllabus: | Development of basic physiotherapy competencies in the management of spinal musculoskeletal disorders. Aspects of typical acute and chronic spinal musculoskeletal disorders covered include - aetiology, pathology and clinical features, assessment, clinical decision making, management strategies - education, prevention, occupational health, functional rehabilitation, manipulation, work hardening, case management, health care system including legislation insurance. |

Unit Outcomes: | On successful completion of this unit students will have - Reviewed common patterns of mechanical spinal pain including the cervical, thoracic and lumbopelvic regions. Developed a method of patient interview relevant to spinal pain disorders and interpretation of information obtained. Recognised subjective features of spinal pain disorders suggestive of non-mechanical disorders and requirement of a medical referral. Applied knowledge of a spinal anatomy and biomechanics and related pathology to the interpretation of patient symptoms and symptom behaviour. Developed a process of planning and performing a physical examination of the spine and documenting and interpreting the findings. Recognised the association between physical examination findings and patient disability and developed a relevant treatment plan. Developed methods of management of spinal pain including mobilisation and manipulation, therapeutic exercise and posture modification. Recognised postural and ergonomic factors contributing to the development of spinal pain and management of these issues. Developed skills in appropriate medical communication and relevant methods of treatment outcome analysis. |
