Syllabus:Role of the surveyor. Familiarisation, testing, care and basic maintenance of modern survey instruments. Surveying measurements - theodolite and total station measurements, steel-band and electronic distance measurements, levelling operations, and totalstation traversing and detailed mapping. Reduction and verification of plane surveying observations. Digital and rotating-laser levels. Survey measurement with obstructions. Site set out techniques.
 
Unit Outcomes: On completion of this unit students will have - Gained an understanding of the basic surveying techniques used to map or position points on the earths surface, become proficient in the use of modern surveying equipment such as the Automatic Level and theTotal Station and developed the management and practical skills necessary to carry out basic surveying tasks.
