Syllabus:General chemistry involving elements and compounds, chemical bonding, structure of matter, stoichiometry, volumetric analysis, oxidation/reduction, shapes of molecules and intermolecular forces. Experiments involving quantitative analysis, introductory titrimetric analysis, measurement of heats and rates of reactions.
 
Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit students should be able to - Efficiently and accurately perform a range of laboratory procedures. Appreciate the need for safe working practices in the laboratory. Perform a range of mathematical calculations relatedto the manipulation and interpretation of data. Demonstrate an understanding of atomic structure, write and balance chemical equations, solve problems on volumetric analysis, identify oxidation-reduction reactions and determine oxidation states of atoms/ions. Demonstrate a basic understanding of chemical bonding and be able to apply the VSEPR theory to determine the shape of molecules. Demonstrate an understanding of the laws governing the behaviour of gases and be able to solve simple problems relating to the application of these laws. Describe the types of intermolecular forces present in solids, liquids and gases. Demonstrate a basic understanding of the structure and properties macromolecular substances.
