307651 v.1 Bachelor of Science (Accelerated Honours)
BSc(Hons)(Curtin)
Introduction
This accelerated honours program provides the opportunity to experience research and research management from an early stage. The program has been designed to meet the specific needs of high performing students in science, by providing an enriched program with the option of fast-tracking the four year Bachelor of Sciences (Honours) into a full-time three year course. It encompasses the fundamental theory and practical components required for prospective students intending to become professional scientists and technologists in their chosen field. It also has the flexibility to allow the choice of a major in Chemistry, Applied Physics, Environmental Biology and Mathematical Sciences.
Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites
Minimum TER of 98.0 or equivalent standing. TEE Applicable Mathematics and two out of TEE Calculus, Physics, Chemistry or Biology. Well-performing candidates without one of the prerequisite subjects may be accepted and required to undertake an additional program of preparatory studies. It is also possible to enter the degree at the end of a first year science course with a course weighted average greater than 80 per cent.
Specific Requirements
Students must obtain a course weighted average of greater than 80 per cent each year to remain in the program.
Recognition of Prior Learning
Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.
Duration and Availability
The Accelerated Science Program is a three year full-time course only. Part-time study is not available. It is an intensive course, with research projects undertaken over the summer periods with special unit overload in some semesters.
Course Organisation
The honours program is embedded within the course.
Professional Recognition
Depending upon the major area of study chosen, graduates may be eligible to join their relevant professional bodies such as the Australian Institute of Biology, Royal Australian Chemical Institute, Australian Mathematics Society or Australian Institute of Physics.
Career Opportunities
Students who graduate from this Accelerated Honours Science Program will be employed in a wide range of commercial, industrial, research or government organisations. The motivation, dedication and commitment required to complete such an intensive degree will stand the graduates in excellent stead with future employers. For specific field related career opportunities, students should refer to the section containing information about the preferred major. Graduates can expect a high level of international professional mobility.
Additional Course Expenses
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study.
Special Note
Prospective students should note that compressing a four year Bachelor of Science with Honours course into a three year time period will result in an intensive and challenging program. The finalised course structure for second and third year will be available at enrolment time.
