Introduction
The Australian Folklife Major provides students with an introduction to the theory, methodology and application of folklore and folklife. Understanding and appreciating the significance of folklore and folklife, both as an aspect of cultural heritage and as a continuing influence in contemporary life. The theory and method of contemporary folkloristics, consideration of the influence of folkore and folklife in Australian society, past and present, the application of folklore to cultural tourism, education, community work and other professional areas. The course, or individual units within it, will be of value to occupations in cultural heritage, museums, cultural planning and development, Human resources, organisational development and organisational behaviour. International students requiring an understanding of the informal aspects of Australian culture and society may also find individual units of this course of great value.

Special Note
It is anticipated that in the future, students will study through open learning delivery with access to the combined resources of Curtin University and Monash University. In the meantime, students may enrol in either institution and undertake units on a Cross Institutional Enrolment basis. It is intended that students undertaking it through Open Learning Australia (OLA) transfer to that course. The OLA course will be organised according to the four annual study periods of OLA (refer to OLA Handbook or contact the Centre for Educational Advancement at Curtin University).
