198404 v.2 Master of Science (Geoscience Exploration)

MSc(Curtin)

Introduction

This course provides advanced postgraduate training in the combined disciplines of applied geology and exploration geophysics. It caters for both the continuing student and the experienced geoscientist already employed in the petroleum, mineral, and groundwater exploration industries.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

An appropriate postgraduate diploma in either geology or geophysics.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability

This fee paying course is one year full-time or equivalent part-time study. There is considerable flexibility in course structure, for example, some of the units may be taught in concentrated blocks at times to suit both students and staff. Research projects may be undertaken over periods such as annual or long service leave, or during periods of employment where adequate supervision can be arranged.

Course Organisation

This course requires a program of study that will be made up of specialist and project units. Specialist coursework units are selected from the full range available in the appropriate postgraduate diploma courses, (excluding any previously undertaken aspart of an honours or postgraduate diploma program), together with project units specific to this course. At least one double unit in geoscience exploration project work (combining geological and geophysical research) must be included in the course. This course is being jointly run by the Department of Exploration Geophysics and the Department of Applied Geology.

Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study.
