195303 v.5 Master of Science (Mathematics)

MSc(Curtin)

Introduction

This research course provides an opportunity to undertake a significant study in an area of mathematics and statistics. Areas of research usually reflect research interests of staff in one of the areas of applied mathematics, discrete mathematics, numerical analysis, operations research and statistics. Thesis topics are selected from problems of continuing or emerging significance in mathematics and relate strongly to relevant problems arising from local industry and govenment.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

An undergraduate degree or equivalent in mathematics or related field, and appropriate postgraduate diploma, or an appropriate degree.

Duration and Availability

This research course is of one to two years full-time or equivalent part-time study.

Course Organisation

This course is studied as a research degree. The content of the degree should be determined in consultation with the Postgraduate Coordinator, Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Students without prior studies in research methods and statistical data analysis will be required to undertake relevant preparatory units. This will increase the stated course duration.

Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study.

Special Note

It is a requirement that two-thirds of this course is undertaken by research and only one-third by coursework. Students should not enrol in this research course to receive a related Postgraduate Diploma but rather have undertaken it as a requisite for admission.
