158710 v.3 Bachelor of Arts (International Studies)

BA(Curtin)

Introduction

This course in Asian language and culture, normally includes one or two semesters of residence in an Asian country and of study at an Asian university. It may only be taken in combination with another Curtin degree course for example, the Bachelor of Arts (Design), Bachelor of Education, Bachelor of Science (Environmental Biology), Bachelor of Science (Computer Science), the former Multidisciplinary Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Engineering (Civil Engineering). The course provides graduates from a wide range of disciplines, with high levels of competence in an Asian language (Chinese (Mandarin), Indonesian, Japanese or Korean) and with an awareness and familiarity of the society, economy and culture of the country where that language is spoken. It equips graduates to practice their profession in an increasingly internationalising world.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

Applicants intending to undertake this course must be currently enrolled in, and have completed at least the first two years of a Curtin bachelors degree program with provision for conjoint enrolment in the Bachelor of Arts (International Studies). Students normally have passed some introductory Asian languages and area studies units prior to enrolment in this course.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of prior learning of eight full units from the cognate degree will be awarded.

Duration and Availability

This course consists of four semesters of full-time study over and above that required for the cognate degree. Some of the units of this program are available on a part-time and/or external basis. It is expected that students spend one or two semesters studying abroad at an Asian university.

Course Organisation

It is expected that students undertake one or, preferably, two semesters of Study Abroad at an Asian university as a part of this combined degree program. Where possible, units in the cognate degree are taken subject to the approval of the Head of Schooland/or the exchange university. In addition to the full requirements of the cognate degree, students undertaking the Bachelor of Arts (International Studies) complete, either at Curtin or at an Asian university, the equivalent of eight full units, in Asian studies. The remaining eight full units of the cognate degree will be ascribed to the Bachelor of Arts (International Studies) on a recognition of prior learning basis.

Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study. Expenses will include the travel and living costs associated with the Study Abroad component of the course. Currently, Austudy recipients receive a supplementation for this purpose.
