Introduction
This course provides theoretical foundations together with simulated workshop experiences for a range of counselling approaches, techniques and practice applications commencing at an introductory level then progressing to more advanced levels. It includes units in communication theory and skills, group work, couple and family dynamics and counselling plus two units selected from a range of options which vary according to availability of resoures. Counselling is an expanding activity for a number of professional practitioners working in human services agencies. Graduates have the knowledge and skills to enhance existing professional practice or, for those without prior counselling experience, employment prospects in such agencies.
Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites
In addition to the University's standard entry requirements, applicants are required to have an appropriate academic qualification and relevant work experience. Relevant work experience that can demonstrate a minimum three years counselling practice in an approved setting is also acceptable.
Recognition of Prior Learning
Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.
Duration and Availability
This fee paying course is one year full-time or equivalent part-time study. Some optional units may be available through external study.
Additional Course Expenses
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study.
