Course Overview
Bachelor Double Degrees prepare students to develop broad and coherent knowledge and skills in more than one discipline for professional work and further learning corresponding to AQF level 7 qualifications.
Students undertake the Bachelor of Engineering Pre-Major in their first year and on successful completion proceed in their second year to a chosen Engineering and Science specialisation. The double degree is designed to prepare students who will graduate as engineers with advanced scientific skills in a discipline closely aligned with their engineering specialty. The combination of the two degree programs provides graduates with the ability to work at the interface between the two disciplines in research and development.
Course Accreditation
The Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) has been accorded full recognition by Engineers Australia exempting graduates from all academic requirements for corporate membership. To qualify for corporate membership of Engineers Australia a graduate also requires a minimum of four years approved experience following the award of the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) degree.
Professional Recognition
The Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) has been accorded full recognition by Engineers Australia exempting graduates from all academic requirements for corporate membership. Credit for Recognised Learning
Applications for credit towards a course are assessed on an individual basis. Credit reduces the amount of learning required to complete the course and may be granted for formal education qualifications, non-formal learning from non-award programs of study and informal learning through work experiences. Pathway to Further Study
Graduates with a Bachelor Degree may qualify for entry to some Graduate Certificates, Graduate Diplomas and Master by Coursework degrees. Graduates with a Bachelor Degree with Honours may also qualify for entry to a Master or Doctorate by Research. For further details, see the University website http://curtin.edu.au.
Course Entry/Completion Note
In certain cases, the need to undertake an additional program of preparatory studies may result in an extension of studies beyond the normal length of the course.
Course Organisation
Bachelor Double Degrees include a combined degree study program leading to two awards. The duration of the double degree may vary among disciplines, but typically requires less time to complete than if the two undergraduate degrees were studied separately.
Students enrolled in the double degree program may elect to transfer to a single degree course in one of the two disciplines. In this event the relevant Head of Department shall determine the amount of credit to be transferred to the single degree. The structure of Engineering, Science and Computing owned double degrees is such that students have the option of completing the component Engineering, Science or Computing degree in the minimum time, provided they elect to change from the double degree within the first two semesters of the course.
Course Learning Outcomes
A graduate of this course can:
1. develop and apply fundamental theoretical and technical knowledge to identify and provide solutions to complex problems in a science and an engineering discipline
2. demonstrate development of advanced knowledge and understanding in a science and an engineering discipline
3. apply knowledge using realistic, practical and analytical approaches to problem-solving, design and research
4. communicate effectively with a variety of audiences through the development of appropriate plans and reports
5. identify and use suitable technologies to plan and execute project work and/or a piece of research and scholarship with some intellectual independence
6. demonstrate self-discipline, self-management skills, personal responsibility and the ability to set learning and achievement goals
7. work effectively in teams with global, international and environmentally responsible perspectives
8. recognise the importance of cultural diversity in the context of scientific and engineering work
9. demonstrate leadership, professional behaviour and ethical practice in the context of scientific and engineering work
Duration and Availability
This course is five years full-time or equivalent part-time study. The course is available for mid-year entry. Some majors in this course are not available at all campus locations and to international students studying in Australia; please refer to information provided for individual majors.
