This major is one of five in the Master of Media and Communication course. This major incorporates closely aligned disciplines within the broad fields of the social sciences and literary and cultural studies, enabling students to develop advanced critical and theoretical understandings wither of the ways in which contemporary local, regional and national cultures are affected by, and react to processes of global change such as industrialisation, urbanisation, increasing inter-ethnic contacts, environmental transformation and new modes of communication, or how those values are articulated though social and cultural practice. Many of the areas of media and communication practice are contextualised within social and cultural theory, and this major encourages students to develop high level research skills that can be applied in higher degree studies.
