Syllabus: | Introduction to basic properties of dynamics, problem formulation and solution concepts, coordinate systems, planar motion of rigid bodies, Newton's Second Law, free body diagrams, static and dynamic friction, inclined plane motion, relative motion, velocity and acceleration diagrams, and rotating and reciprocating components. Rigid body motion with applied forces and torques. Mass moments of inertia, parallel axis theorem, simple and complex bodies, thin plates and experimental measurement. Introductionto mechanical power transfer systems including gears (fixed axis and epicyclic), belt drives (flat and Vee belts), Hooke's joints, and friction clutches (disk, cone and centrifugal). |
