Nanotechnology encompasses the science and technology of understanding and constructing the "very small". There is no single discipline of nanotechnology. The term broadly refers to such fields as biology, physics, chemistry or materials science- any scientific field that deals with the controlled design and assembly of nanostructures. This course aims to educate and train scientists for careers in nanotechnology through a grounding in any two of the disciplines of chemistry, physics and molecular biology, with a focus on the aspects of those disciplines that have particular relevance to nanotechnology. Practical laboratory skills, communication skills and creative and critical thinking are emphasised throughout the course along with practical training in the professional aspects of scientific practice in a research environment.
TEE Applicable Mathematics and Physics or Chemistry. TEE Calculus is desirable.
STAT is not accepted for entry to this course, but can be used to meet English competency.
If Introductory Calculus is not studied in Year 11, a bridging unit is required. Able students with high aggregates or other evidence of academic achievement who do not meet formal entry requirements may still be considered. Enquiries should be directed to the Head of Department.
Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

The first year of the Bachelor of Science (Nanotechnology) provides a grounding in physical sciences through core units in chemistry, physics and mathematics. From second year level the course offers three discipline streams: Chemistry, Physics and Molecular Biology. Students elect to follow one of the double discipline streams to complete the degree. A package of nanotechnology / nanochemistry units is common to all three streams, providing a contextual link between the different scientific disciplines. The final two semesters include advanced studies in nanotechnology together with a nanotechnology research project supervised by research staff in one or more of the Departments of Applied Chemistry, Applied Physics and/or Biomedical Science.
The Royal Australian Chemical Institute and the Australian Institute of Physics both recognise the course as fulfilling the academic requirements for graduate membership of the respective societies. On obtaining the necessary experience, graduates will be admitted to full membership of either institute.
Nanotechnology graduates may be employed in industry or government organisations, as materials characterisation scientists, as research scientists in micro analytical facilities and as medical physicists in hospitals.
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials.
