Introduction

This course provides advanced knowledge and skills in hospital pharmacy, with a focus on enhanced clinical pharmacy and clinical research capability.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

A pharmacy degree, an appropriate honours degree or a relevant postgraduate diploma with a minimum of one year of work experience as a registered pharmacist, preferably with experience in hospital pharmacy. Selection is competitive and is based on grades achieved in previous study and relevant experience.

Duration and Availability

This fee paying course is three semesters full-time or equivalent part-time study. Units are usually scheduled to facilitate part-time study. Clinical Pharmacy Project 697 requires a significant time commitment to allow for completion in the semester duration. Not all optional units are available each year.

Intermediate Awards 1

A student who has successfully completed the requirements of an approved intermediate award may apply for graduation in that award subject to approval of Head of School/Department. Fees apply. Intermediate award(s) approved for this course are:

Postgraduate Diploma in Pharmacy.

Course Organisation

This course builds on the curriculum of the hospital pharmacy stream within the graduate diploma to provide students with an opportunity to do some research of their own. Under the guidance of one of Curtin’s xperienced staff, students will complete a project in clinical trials, drug utilisation reviews, drug usage studies, implementation of clinical pharmacy services or another related topic.

Professional Recognition

Registered pharmacists who successfully complete the course may apply for continuing professional development (CPD) credits. The award of this course does not qualify a graduate for registration as a pharmacist in Australia.

Career Opportunities

For pharmacists, this program may lead to careers in areas such as: • medication reviews and cognitive services • hospital pharmacy specialisation • introduction of new practices in community pharmacy • academia. This course does not qualify graduates for registration as a pharmacist.

Additional Course Expenses

Students are expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials. Students may require a laboratory coat.
