This course provides a balance between broad-based core knowledge and professional and practical skills. Students are introduced to the fundamentals of health safety and environment in first year, as well as core science units. All students will undertake units in occupational hygiene, safety and environmental health law, risk assessment and risk management, environmental impact assessment, environmental health and toxicology, providing skills and knowledge in health and safety and environmental health. In second year, students will have the opportunity to specialise in environmental health or health and safety.
None. One course from the Science Learning Area# and one TEE mathematics subject desirable. STAT Written English and MC Quantitative. # Earth and Environmental Science (stage 3 for 2010); or TEE subjects: Biology; Human Biology; Chemistry; Physical Science or Physics satisfies this requirement.
STAT elements considered are E and either V or Q.
Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.
This course is three years full-time or equivalent part-time study. It is available in both internal and external study modes. International onshore students on student visa's are not permitted to study externally.
In the first year, all students are introduced to core science units, including physics, chemistry, microbiology and human biology. In second year students select either an Environmental Health or a Health and Safety major. Students who select environmental health undertake specialised units including food science, safety and hygiene, environmental systems, water and air pollution, waste management, epidemiology and communicable diseases, environmental noise and law. In addition to traditional lectures, laboratory and fieldwork, students attend professional placements and tutorials with environmental health practitioners. Students who select health and safety undertake specialised units including occupational health, risk assessment, risk control and management, safety technology, occupational hygiene, toxicology and ergonomics. Professional placements and tutorials with health and safety practitioners will be offered during second and third year of the course.
Students who complete the Health and Safety major are eligible for membership with the Safety Institute of Australia (not required to practice profession) and eligible for membership with the Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (UK) (not required to practice profession). Graduates of the Environmental Health major are eligible for membership of the Australian Institute of Environmental Health.
The field of health and safety has undergone significant changes during the recent past, which requires the attention of highly qualified and conceptually proficient professionals. Opportunities may exist in a wide range of private companies and government departments and organisations as safety advisors, trainers, researchers and risk managers. Many graduates also find work interstate or overseas. Environmental health graduates may enter state government departments, local government authorities and industry as environmental health officers or scientific officers. Opportunities may also exist interstate or overseas. This is the only course in Western Australia recognised for appointment as an environmental health officer.
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials.
