Syllabus: This unit provides a survey of Australia's engagement with Asia, with special emphasis on the dimensions of Australia's security, economy and justice in the Asia Pacific region. Emphasis will be given to critical analysis of specific issues and problems in the Cold War and beyond such as the presence of US forces in Asia, the rise of China, Australia's bilateral relations with the US, China, Japan and Indonesia in comparative perspective, regionalism/multilateralism, human rights/Asian values, modernism/ecopessimism and Australia and the global economy.
