311148 v.3 Bachelor of Science - School of Science and Computing

Course CRICOS Code: 061600D
Registered full-time Duration for International Onshore Students on student visas: 3 Years

Introduction

This course is designed to provide students with an opportunity to pursue their interest in science by choosing a single major in one of the following areas of study: chemistry, physics, multidisciplinary science or a double major in the following areas of study: actuarial and applied statistics, mathematical sciences and computing, mathematical sciences and finance. Graduates emerge with a comprehensive foundation in their chosen area of science and are also prepared for a range of employment opportunities in the scientific field and for those that excel a chance to further their knowledge through our research programs.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisities

All the above majors except Multidisciplinary Science require TEE Applicable Mathematics and the chosen core major/s at TEE level. TEE Calculus is desirable. If Introductory Calculus has not been studied a bridging unit may be required. For the Multidisciplinary Science major any one TEE Maths and any one TEE Science is acceptable. Please see the course coordinator for any further information.

Specific Requirements

The STAT is not accepted for entry to this course except for the Multidisciplinary Science major. Students should contact the course coordinator for further information regarding this major.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability

This course is of three years duration full-time or the equivalent part-time study. Two intakes are offered each year, in March and August. Prospective students should note that places may not always be available for the August intake.

Course Organisaiton

In the first or foundation year of the course students are required to take the unit Science Communications 101, a Computer Science unit, a Mathematics unit and a Statistics/Data Analysis unit. Single majors have differing requirements. However in each case students are required to take at least 200 credits at second and third year level in their major area of study with a minimum of 100 credits at third year level. Students enrolled in a double major may elect to transfer to a single major, where appropriate. In this event, the relevant Head of Department shall determine the amount of credit to be transferred to the single major. The student must complete a third year unit of a project nature in their relevant area of study.

Professional Recognition

Graduates of this course may be eligible for membership in the relevant society or institute of their chosen area of study. Further details can be obtained from the course coordinator.

Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials.

Special Note

A Science Enabling Course is available through which it is possible to study 'bridging' units in chemistry, maths and physics - in parallel with the first year of study in the degree.

Combined Degree Information

Mathematical Sciences is also available in a double degree with Finance or Secondary Education.
