305221 v.4 Bachelor of Science (Chemistry), Bachelor of Education (Secondary Education)

BSc(Curtin), BEd(Curtin)

Introduction
This double degree provides graduates with skills and qualifications to practice as a scientist in industry and/or as a teacher in secondary schools. It provides opportunities to combine rigorous study in Chemistry (the 'major'), with support studies in another teaching area of their choice. It is designed to give graduates a comprehensive foundation in chemistry and the necessary skills for effective classroom communication at the secondary school level. The solid foundation in chemistry will offer graduates employment opportunities in analytical, industrial and research laboratories as well as in teaching. The intent is to produce graduates with teaching skills and a sound foundation in a science discipline.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites
Chemistry and Applicable Mathematics. Physics is desirable.

Specific Requirements
The Faculty of Education requires all Secondary Education students to pass a literacy, numeracy and ICT competency test in the first year of the degree. Students who do not pass will be required to take additional study in order to meet competency requirements in these areas. Professional Practice in school settings is a core requirement of the degree and may involve out of semester commitment by students. Applicants for this course should refer to the Criminal Record Screening/Clearance Section of this publication. The STAT is not accepted for entry to this course.

Recognition of Prior Learning
Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability
The course is four years full-time or equivalent part-time study.

Course Organisation
Students enrolled in the double degree must pass all units in the education component to gain accreditation and must successfully complete the major stream in chemistry. Students may elect to transfer to a single degree in one of the two disciplines. In this event, the relevant Head of School shall determine the amount of credit transferred to the single degree.

Professional Recognition
This course is recognised nationally as an initial pre-service teaching qualification. Graduates will be eligible for membership of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute.

Additional Course Expenses
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study.
