The Geophysics Honours Major (BSc) (Honours) aims to extend students' knowledge of current academic research methodology as it is applied in the field of geophysics and to demonstrate this through the conduct of a supervised research project and preparation of an honours dissertation.
Professional Recognition
Graduates of this Major may be eligible for membership to the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (USA), the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers, and the Australian Society of Exploration Geophysicists.
Career Opportunities
Honours graduates have demonstrated an ability to work independently, to plan and implement a scientific investigation, to meet project deadlines, and to communicate information to a professional standard. For this reason, many employers of geophysics professionals have a preference for honours graduates, and some employers will only consider graduates with an honours degree.
Major/Stream Entry and Completion Details
Applicants admitted into Bachelor of Science (Science) an undertaking the Geophysics Major may be invited to undertake the honours course if their semester-weighted average is more than 65% in at least the previous two study periods of full-time study. Applicants from other courses or outside Curtin are advised to contact the Department of Exploration Geophysics for qualification information.
Major/Minor/Stream Organisation
This Major consists of coursework units in seismic imaging, seismic interpretation, borehole geophysics and electromagnetic and potential field methods. This is followed by the Geoscience Honours Dissertation unit.
Major/Stream Learning Outcomes
A graduate of this course can:
1. apply modern geophysical methods to exploration problems in petroleum, mineral and groundwater exploration
2. analyse geophysical approaches to gathering subsurface information and solving problems with innovation
3. locate, appraise and select publicly available literature and data in printed and electronic media
4. report on new geophysical development to industry, government and academia using written and oral presentations
5. select the best geophysical method and modern geophysical instruments and computer software to solve problems, communicating solutions electronically
6. demonstrate an ability to learn independently and sustainably beyond graduation
7. recognise the global nature of geophysical problems and regional issues relating to exploration for resources
8. demonstrate an understanding of the cultural impact of resource exploration and development
9. apply a professional and ethical approach to working with individuals and organisations, and work independently and in teams when required to complete projects

This Major is one-year full-time study.
