Course Overview
The optimisation of existing producing oil and gas assets and the successful future development of new offshore reserves requires the engagement and application of a world class subsea engineering knowledge and research. The MSc global subsea engineering course offers a unique opportunity for post graduate students to engage and learn in an internationally collaborative environment centred around two major oil and gas hubs: Aberdeen and Perth Western Australia. Students undertaking this MSc have the opportunity to complete four units at both institutions (i.e. Curtin then Aberdeen) followed by the completion of a project thesis at either institution. Thesis topics will be jointly developed by both institutions leveraging the strong industry links at both oil and gas hubs. The eight taught units and thesis are will be conducted over three study periods. The course durations is a function of the stream entry selection but is nominally 14 months in total. At the successful completion of the course students will be awarded a degree from both institutions (i.e. dual award).
Course Accreditation Status
Accreditation of this course will be sought from a recognised Institute, College, Society or Association and will be consistently applied across both Universities (i.e. Aberdeen and Curtin). The purpose of this accreditation is to achieve international recognition, for example by the Washington Accord.
Career Opportunities
As an MSc subsea engineer you may pursue a rewarding career in the oil and gas industry, in the private or public sectors. These may include working with internationally recognised major equipment suppliers, construction and installation contractors, consulting engineering firms, safety and environmental regulators and oil and gas operating companies. You can also extend and lever your studies by undertaking PhD research programs in subsea engineering.

Course Entry and Completion Details
Specifically applicants require (or have the equivalent of) an Australian bachelor honours degree of 2nd class upper or above in engineering and have an overall IELTs of 6.5 or greater with individual scores for writing, listening, reading and speaking to be greater than or equal to 6.0.
Credit for Recognised Learning
Applications for credit towards a course are assessed on an individual basis. Credit reduces the amount of learning required to complete the course and may be granted for formal education qualifications, non-formal learning from non-award programs of study and informal learning through work experiences. Students are expected to complete at least one semester (4 core units) at both institutions.
Course Organisation
MSc Global Subsea contains a series of eight (8) compulsory course units which must be undertaken in the prescribed sequence followed by a research project thesis.
Course Learning Outcomes
A graduate of this course can:
1. apply subsea engineering knowledge to field developments at a recognised international level; extend the boundaries through research to improve the safety, environmental and economic sustainability for offshore operations
2. critically analyse a subsea engineering problem and apply sound engineering principles to determine alternative solutions; utilise intellectual questioning independent and creative thinking to select optimal solutions
3. identify, research and inquire into discipline problems; source and evaluate data using appropriate technologies; synthesise and analyse data with a dispassionate perspective
4. communicate effectively in a variety of contexts; develop the capacity to use informed argument and reasoning and utilise a wide range of oral and written communication styles
5. implement, evaluate and adapt appropriate technologies for specific subsea contexts; oversee continual design and operational improvement of subsea systems
6. appreciate the need for, and develop, a lifelong learning skills strategy; be open to furthering personal development and self-reflection beyond graduation
7. recognise the global nature of the oil and gas industry and apply global standard practices and skills for acceptable engineering outcomes regardless of discipline or geographical location

Duration and availability
This course is 3 study periods full-time - nominally 14 months. This course is delivered in two concurrent streams: Aberdeen University and at Curtin University. Students can select either streams exchanging Universities at the conclusion of the first teaching semester. The nomination of stream refers to the location of the first teaching semester. International students must consider the study visa implications for the selection of course streams. Domestic students are expected to undertake the stream associated with their home country.
