The Geographic Information Science Honours Major (BSc) (Honours) enables students to extend their knowledge of current academic research methodology as it is applied in the field of GIS and Remote Sensing. This is demonstrated through studying specialised units and the conduct of a supervised research project and presentation of an honours dissertation.
Professional Recognition
Graduates of this Major are eligible for membership of the Surveying and Spatial Sciences Institute (SSSI) which is the national body representing the interests of surveying and spatial sciences professionals.
Career Opportunities
Honours Graduates have demonstrated an ability to work independently, to plan and implement a scientific investigation, to meet project deadlines and to communicate information to a professional standard. For this reason, many employers of Geographic Information Science have a preference for Honours graduates, and some employers will only consider graduates with an honours degree.
Major/Stream Entry and Completion Details
Applicants admitted into Bachelor of Science (Science) and undertaking the Geographic Information Science Major may be invited to undertake the honours course if their semester-weighted average is more than 70% in at least the previous two study periods of full-time study. Applicants from other courses or outside Curtin are advised to contact the Department of Spatial Sciences for qualification information.
Major/Minor/Stream Organisation
This Major consists of advanced coursework units in Geographic Information Science and research methodologies, and two Geoscience Honours Dissertation units.
Major/Stream Learning Outcomes
A graduate of this course can:
1. understand the scientific principles and concepts of Geographic Information Science (GIS) and extend existing geospatial methods through GIS research
2. investigate and generate innovative scientific solutions to GIS problems using creative and critical thought
3. evaluate, integrate and interpret geospatial information and use a variety of tools to discover, interpret and visualise
4. communicate effectively through written reports, map visualisation and oral presentations within the ethical and professional framework of GIS
5. select and use appropriate established and emerging GIS technologies for solutions to complex research questions involving geospatial data
6. appreciate the importance of continuous education and training within GIS and take control of individual learning and development
7. appreciate that GIS is an international discipline with varying perspectives on local and global issues; apply international geographic information systems technology and data standards while undertaking research
8. understand the global and cultural issues within GIS and how these impact on the practice of the profession
9. be able to work as an independent scientist and within teams either as a professional leader or collaborator using effective problem-solving and decision-making skills
This Major is one-year full-time study.
