The Chemistry Honours Major (BSc) (Honours) extends knowledge of chemistry, particularly in its application to cutting edge research and problems of industrial relevance. This is demonstrated through studies in advanced concepts, advanced instrumental techniques and applications of both in these areas, and the conduct of a supervised research project and preparation of an honours dissertation.
Career opportunities
Honours graduates have demonstrated an ability to work independently, to plan and implement a scientific investigation, to meet project deadlines, and to communicate information to a professional standard. For this reason, many employers of chemistry professionals have a preference for honours graduates, and some employers will only consider graduates with an honours degree.
Major/Stream Entry and Completion Details
Applicants admitted into Bachelor of Science (Science) and undertaking the Chemistry Major may be invited to undertake the honours course if their semester-weighted average is more than 65% in at least the previous two study periods of full-time study. Applicants from other courses or outside Curtin are advised to contact the Department of Chemistry for qualification information.
Major/Minor/Stream Organisation
This Major consists of two coursework units in advanced Chemistry and a Chemistry Honours Dissertation unit.
Major/Stream Learning Outcomes
A graduate of this course can:
1. demonstrate an advanced understanding of chemical principles and concepts in a range of chemical disciplines
2. think critically, creatively and reflectively to generate innovative scientific solutions to chemical issues through research
3. identify and competently use information technology and a variety of tools to retrieve, manipulate, transform and present data and information
4. communicate effectively to an audience of chemical professionals through the written word and by oral presentation
5. competently use established and emerging technologies in the field of chemistry to address a complex research question
6. demonstrate intellectual independence and engage in continuous education and training within the chemical sciences
7. understand the international and cultural issues in chemistry and how these impact on the practice of chemical science in Australia and surrounding regions
8. assess the importance of cultural diversity and individual human rights and how these impact on the chemical science profession
9. work both as an independent chemical scientist and within teams, either as a professional leader or a collaborator, using effective problem solving and decision making skills in an ethical manner
