Course Overview
Master Degrees (Coursework) prepare students to apply advanced knowledge for professional practice, scholarship and further learning corresponding to AQF level 9 qualifications.
This one year full time equivalent course is for educators in a broad range of fields related to education who hold a four-year teacher education degree or equivalent. The course curriculum builds on students' professional knowledge with an emphasis on critical and independent thinking. The course consists of coursework units, including a Negotiated Research Project. Successful completion of the course may enable students to undertake doctoral level study.

Course Entry and Completion Details
Applicants for a Master Degree (Coursework) are required to meet University academic and English language entry standards; details are provided at http://futurestudents.curtin.edu.au. Subject to the duration of the course applicants usually require a Bachelor Degree or equivalent (and may require relevant work experience), Bachelor Honours Degree, Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma. Any specific course entry and completion requirements must also be met.
An education/teaching degree assessed as being the equivalent of a four-year Australian degree (normally a Bachelor of Education or a four-year combined/double education degree e.g. BSc/BEd) or a three-year degree in a non-education discipline (e.g. Arts, Science, Commerce) plus a minimum one-year teaching qualification such as a Graduate Diploma in Education or Master of Teaching or equivalent. A minimum IELTS score of 6.5 is also required.
Credit for Recognised Learning
Applications for credit towards a course are assessed on an individual basis. Credit reduces the amount of learning required to complete the course and may be granted for formal education qualifications, non-formal learning from non-award programs of study and informal learning through work experiences. Alternative formal professional development experiences such as courses, workshops and ongoing continuing education are considered when determining credit for recognised learning.

Course Organisation
All students complete three core units and including a negotiated research project unit. Students then select four optional units. Optional units are available from three areas, namely Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM); Language, Literacy and Applied Linguistics; and, Advanced Pedagogies. Students may choose optional units from any of the three areas or focus on units within one area.
Course Learning Outcomes
A graduate of this course can:
1. demonstrate and apply comprehensive and in-depth knowledge of educational research and theory
2. formulate and investigate educational problems and solutions via critical engagement with relevant and contemporary empirical and theoretical literature
3. identify, access, analyse and synthesise information from a wide range of sources using appropriate technologies
4. communicate information and ideas effectively through a range of mediums and in ways that are appropriate for a range of audiences and education stakeholders
5. engage critically and effectively with innovative and appropriate technologies for a range of purposes
6. demonstrate a capacity for independent learning, critically evaluate personal performance and respond to feedback with a view to development as a reflective practitioner and lifelong learner
7. consider educational and professional issues from a variety of national and international perspectives with a view to informing and improving educational and professional knowledge and practice
8. appreciate the value of individual and cultural differences, and the important implications these have for knowledge production, effective practice and professionalism in education settings
9. work both independently and collaboratively in a way that demonstrates professionalism, a commitment to socially-just and ethical practices and the capacity for future leadership in the field of education
Duration and Availability
This fee paying course is one year full-time or equivalent part-time study. Two intakes are offered each year, in March and August.
