This major combines scientific, technical and administrative expertise in Health Information Management. Academic staff in the Health Information Management Program have strong links with industry and with professional groups and organisations beyond health, both nationally and internationally, ensuring students have extensive hands-on experience throughout their studies. The Health Information Manager can provide an important link between the clinical, managerial and system aspects of health and is a fulfilling profession responsible for the collection, storage, analysis and distribution of healthcare information. The unique competencies associated with Health Information Management provide for diverse career opportunities within Australia and internationally.

A graduate of this course can:
1. apply health information management principles to support and enhance the delivery of healthcare and the management of healthcare across diverse healthcare systems and organisations
2. critically analyse statistical information, generalisations and reasoning in the field of health information management
3. access, evaluate and synthesise relevant information to develop competencies in health information management and sustainable health information management systems
4. engage, interact and build professional relationships with diverse individuals and stakeholders groups in healthcare organisations and across the health industry general, including clinicians, executive and senior administrators using appropriate verbal and written communication skills and comtemporary communication technologies
5. effectively use comtemporary technologies and information management systems relevant to the health information management profession, including computer hardware and software applications
6. accept responsibility and embrace opportunities for own learning and continuing professional development within the health information management field; demonstrate initiative and leadership
7. compare and contrast health information management practices in different countries; evaluate the impact of individual actions or practices from an international or global perspective
8. demonstrate respect for individual human rights and cultural diversity; work effectively with people from different cultures and backgrounds to achieve desired outcomes
9. work professionally and ethically across a range of healthcare settings and uphold the values of continuous quality improvement
