Syllabus:

The rise of Islamic states. The structure of the bureaucracy in Indonesia 1600-1900. Political and economic penetration of the West into Indonesia. Social movements in the 19th century. The modern transformation and the growth of Indonesian consciousness, the nationalist movement. The national revolution, guided democracy and its aftermath. The new order government and its problems, plus a major research paper.
