Syllabus:

This unit provides students with the tools necessary to meet the challenges of working as a mining engineers and managers in an international setting. Case study based topics include - majors, medium, small scale and contractors. South America, Africa, South Pacific, and Indonesia. Specific cases include - Ekati, Alumbrera, Emperor, OK Tedi, Freeport, Baia Mare, Hartley Plantinum, and Goro. In addition, the following topics are covered - International treaties and summits, sustainable development, corporate reporting and responsibility, product stewardship, legislative and regulatory framework in different countries, voluntary codes and standards. Financing and sustainability in mining project. For example, the Equator principles. Environmental economics- resource rich countries versus resource poor countries. Social impact analysis, Government liaison. Health implications. For example, HIV/AIDS and malaria. Small scale mining and it's impacts. Key concepts in community engagement, stakeholder analysis.Cultural aspects of engagement with Indigenous people and the role of NGOs.
