Syllabus:

This unit is a study of theories of gender and sexuality, exploring ways in which a culture produces, maintains and transforms its understandings of gender, desire, the body, history of narrative and its relationship to cultural change. Also explores representations of gender in the contexts of modernity and postmodernity in contemporary culture and sexuality and the study of gender through theory, structures and the reading of various narrative texts. On successful completion of the units students will apply concepts learnt in Gender Studies 211 and explore their implications through a range of topics, texts and genres. Students will link gender and sexuality to changes brought about in modernity and understand that concepts of gender and sexuality are connected to other categories such as race, class, ethnicity and nationality.
