Syllabus:Organometallic chemistry - bonding, aromatic ligands, metal/carbon compounds. Chemistry of the d-block elements and their compounds - industrial and commercial applications. Coordination compounds, field theory. UV visible spectra, magnetic properties. Consequences of crystal field splitting. Laboratory work - mini projects, preparation and characterisation of a coordination compound.
 
Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit students will have gained knowledge of the properties and preparation of organometallic compounds, the solution chemistry of first row transition metals, the isomerism, magnetism and uv-visible spectra of first row transition metal complex ions and the importance of minerals processing in Western Australia and the extraction of metals from their ores. They will be familiar with problem solving, ie accessing, analysing and critically evaluating relevant information, the application of a range of techniques to solving a particular chemical problem, understanding the concepts of accuracy, precision and confidence limits in analytical procedures, teamwork, when working in a small-group situations and compiling a group reports and the process of peer and self assessment.
