Area:

Department of Applied Chemistry

Credits:

25.0

Contact Hours:

7.0

Lecture:

3 x 1 Hours Weekly

Tutorial:

1 x 1 Hours Weekly

Laboratory:

1 x 3 Hours Weekly

Syllabus:

This unit is designed for students who have passed TEE Chemistry. General chemistry involving ideal gases, thermochemistry and thermodynamics, chemical kinetics, colligative properties, reactions and properties of organic compounds containing common functional groups, reactions and properties of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, isomerism. Experiments involving purification and separation techniques, reactions of functional groups and reactions of hydrocarbons.

Unit Outcomes:

Upon completion of this unit students will have - Efficiently and accurately performed a range of laboratory procedures. Appreciated the need for safe working practices in the laboratory. Performed a range of mathematical calculations related to the manipulation and interpretation of data. Identified the basic functional groups in organic compounds and predicted the common reactions these will undergo. Identified and named simple hydrocarbons using IUPAC rules. Identified the basic functionality in hydrocarbon compounds, predicted their common reactions. Classified isomers of organic compounds. Demonstrated an understanding of the laws governing the behaviour of gases, solved simple problems relating to these laws. Demonstrated an understanding of the first law of thermodynamics, solved simple problems relating to the application of this law. Demonstrated an understanding of the chemical kinetics and the factors affecting reaction rates. Demonstrated an understanding of colligative properties, solved simple problems relating to the effect of these on solution properties.
